        "en": "<p data-HoCid=\"6906360\" data-originallang=\"en\">Mr. Speaker, on behalf of all New Democrats, we express our condolences to the family and loved ones of Alexa McDonough. This is a loss not just for the New Democrats and her family but for all Canadians.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"6906361\" data-originallang=\"en\">As we have heard from so many people, Alexa, as she was known across Canada, was someone who fought her whole life for social justice. She championed women in politics and never backed down from a challenge. She was not afraid to make people uncomfortable. She was not afraid to make clear that for women to have a place in politics they had to fight, and she fought hard. She became the leader of the Nova Scotia NDP 41 years ago today, and in doing so she became the first woman to lead a major political party in Canada. To really understand the impact of that, we need to know that she not only broke barriers for people in a profound way; she broke barriers so that other people could dream big and do the same. </p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"6906362\" data-originallang=\"en\">I think about all the people who have been touched by her leadership and pioneering. I think about the fact that I would not be here today if it were not for people like Alexa McDonough and the fact that she broke barriers. I think not only of the impact she has had on me, but also that which she has had on the lives of so many women.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"6906363\" data-originallang=\"en\"> I had the honour of meeting Alexa a number of times, particularly when I visited Nova Scotia. The last time was in 2019, when she walked into the room during a campaign event. Although she had already given so much of her life to politics and social justice, she was not done; she still showed up to provide her support, and I saw the people in the room light up when she walked in. The cheer for her was deafening. All of the women who looked up to Alexa saw someone who made them feel like they belonged. That is what Alexa did. She made so many people realize they belonged. </p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"6906364\" data-originallang=\"en\">She was a trailblazer in so many ways. She was ahead of her time in fighting for the inclusion of all people, regardless of race, religion, gender and sexual orientation. She was someone who believed fundamentally in the principle that everyone belongs.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"6906365\" data-originallang=\"fr\">Alexa McDonough dedicated her life to social justice, championed women in politics and never shied away from a challenge. She became the first woman to lead a major political party in Canada. She overcame obstacles so that others could do the same.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"6906366\" data-originallang=\"en\">I want to acknowledge the specific ways and some of the contributions. There are so many and people have laid out some of those contributions already, but I want to talk about some of the specific things that Alexa contributed to Canadians and Nova Scotians. She brought specific awareness to the challenges faced by the Black community in Africville, a community in Nova Scotia, she fought hard to overhaul Halifax's welfare system, she negotiated the first maternity leave in the history of Halifax and she played a pivotal role in advancing women's rightful place in Canadian politics. </p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"6906367\" data-originallang=\"en\">Alexa had the growing determination to build a better Canada and make it more fair for all Canadians. Her story is truly one of dedication, determination and decency. She was a remarkable trailblazer, an activist, a social worker, an educator, a feminist, a politician and, perhaps most significantly, a leader fighting to make life better for people.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"6906368\" data-originallang=\"fr\">Rest in peace, Alexa. We will miss you.</p>",

Elle est devenue cheffe du NPD de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse il y a 41 ans aujourd'hui et, ce faisant, elle est devenue la premi\u00e8re femme \u00e0 diriger un grand parti politique au Canada. Pour bien comprendre tout ce que ce geste signifie, il faut savoir qu'elle n'a pas seulement bris\u00e9 r\u00e9solument les barri\u00e8res pour ses semblables, mais qu'elle a aussi fait tomber les barri\u00e8res pour que d'autres puissent r\u00eaver grand et faire de m\u00eame. </p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"6906362\" data-originallang=\"en\"> Je pense \u00e0 toutes les personnes qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 touch\u00e9es par son leadership et son esprit de pionni\u00e8re. Je pense au fait que je ne serais pas ici aujourd'hui si ce n'avait \u00e9t\u00e9 d'Alexa McDonough et des barri\u00e8res que des gens comme elle ont su faire tomber. Je pense non seulement \u00e0 l'influence qu'elle a eue sur moi, mais aussi \u00e0 celle qu'elle a eue sur la vie de tant de femmes.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"6906363\" data-originallang=\"en\">J'ai eu l'honneur de rencontrer Alexa \u00e0 quelques reprises, en particulier lors de visites en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse. Je lui ai parl\u00e9 pour la derni\u00e8re fois en 2019, lorsqu'elle est entr\u00e9e dans la salle pendant une activit\u00e9 \u00e9lectorale. M\u00eame si elle avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 consacr\u00e9 une si grande partie de sa vie \u00e0 la politique et \u00e0 la justice sociale, ces sujets lui tenaient toujours \u00e0 c\u0153ur et elle \u00e9tait venue apporter son soutien. Le visage des gens s'est illumin\u00e9 lorsqu'elle est entr\u00e9e dans la salle. Les applaudissements \u00e9taient assourdissants. Les femmes voyaient en Alexa une personne qui leur faisait sentir qu'elles \u00e9taient \u00e0 leur place. Tel \u00e9tait le pouvoir d'Alexa. Elle a permis \u00e0 tellement de personnes de r\u00e9aliser qu'elles \u00e9taient vraiment \u00e0 leur place. </p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"6906364\" data-originallang=\"en\">Elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 une pionni\u00e8re de tellement de fa\u00e7ons. Elle \u00e9tait en avance sur son temps dans sa lutte pour l'inclusion de toutes les personnes, peu importe leur race, leur religion, leur genre ou leur orientation sexuelle. Elle croyait fondamentalement au principe voulant que chacun a sa place. </p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"6906365\" data-originallang=\"fr\">Alexa McDonough a consacr\u00e9 sa vie \u00e0 la justice sociale, a d\u00e9fendu les femmes en politique et n'a jamais recul\u00e9 devant un d\u00e9fi. Elle est devenue la premi\u00e8re femme \u00e0 diriger un parti politique majeur au Canada. Elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 une pionni\u00e8re remarquable, une activiste, une travailleuse sociale, une \u00e9ducatrice, une f\u00e9ministe, une politicienne et, plus important encore peut-\u00eatre, une leader qui a lutt\u00e9 pour am\u00e9liorer la vie de tous. </p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"6906368\" data-originallang=\"fr\">Repose en paix, Alexa. Tu nous manques.</p>"
