Bill <a data-HoCid=\"9773124\" href=\"/bills/42-1/C-401/\" title=\"An Act to amend the Canada Elections Act (voting age)\">C-401</a> will lower the voting age in Canada and create a system in which young people can vote once they turn 16.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"5372190\" data-originallang=\"en\">The objective of this legislation is to increase voter turnout among young people in Canada. Across a number of western democracies, voter turnout is the weakest in the demographic where voting matters the most, the people on whose lives the decisions will have the most impact. Young people in Canada, ages 18 to 24, vote the least. Research has shown that if they start voting at a younger age they will continue voting longer. If someone has not started voting before the age of 25, that individual will not start voting at 30. The evidence is clear.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"5372191\" data-originallang=\"en\">The goal of this amendment to the Canada Elections Act is to give young people the right to vote at the age of 16, knowing that in the context of still being in high school, still being at home, and being in their own community, they are more likely to vote.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"5372192\" data-originallang=\"en\">I hope the House will look on this bill favourably. Some small adjustments will need to be made based on Bill <a data-HoCid=\"9808070\" href=\"/bills/42-1/C-76/\" title=\"An Act to amend the Canada Elections Act and other Acts and to make certain consequential amendments\">C-76</a>, which was tabled in the House yesterday.</p>\n<p class=\"procedural\" data-HoCid=\"2\"> (Motions deemed adopted, bill read the first time and printed) </p>",

Dans un certain nombre de d\u00e9mocraties occidentales, le taux de participation \u00e9lectorale est le plus faible au sein du groupe d\u00e9mographique pour lequel le droit de vote compte le plus, soit les jeunes. En effet, c'est sur la vie des jeunes que les d\u00e9cisions auront l'impact le plus profond. Au Canada, ce sont les jeunes de 18 \u00e0 24 ans qui votent le moins. Des travaux de recherche montrent que plus on commence \u00e0 voter jeune, plus on votera longtemps au cours de sa vie. Si une personne n'a pas commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 voter avant l'\u00e2ge de 25 ans, elle ne le fera pas \u00e0 30 ans. Les preuves sont claires.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"5372191\" data-originallang=\"en\">Le but de cette modification \u00e0 la Loi \u00e9lectorale du Canada est d'accorder aux jeunes le droit de vote \u00e0 16 ans, car on sait qu'ils sont plus susceptibles de voter, puisqu'ils sont toujours \u00e0 l'\u00e9cole secondaire, qu'ils habitent encore chez leurs parents et qu'ils sont tr\u00e8s familiers avec leur milieu communautaire.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"5372192\" data-originallang=\"en\">J'esp\u00e8re que la Chambre sera favorable \u00e0 ce projet de loi.
