While I physically sit on his side of the House, I am not from his side of the House, but I also appreciate my colleagues in all the seats in this place.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"3405816\" data-originallang=\"en\">The root of the member's question highlights the reason there was such inaction by the previous Liberal government on these important issues and in trademarks specifically. The transition in some parts of the bill, including modernizing trademarks law and empowering intellectual property register at the border, will be substantial changes.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"3405817\" data-originallang=\"en\">The hon. member is correct in that regard, but the challenge in modernizing does not excuse us from acting. The previous Liberal government spent 12 years, with Canada being named each year as a special trade country to watch, alongside other countries like China and Saudi Arabia, just because it was difficult. </p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"3405818\" data-originallang=\"en\">Our government has looked at this seriously in the last few years, and Bill <a data-HoCid=\"6004372\" href=\"/bills/41-1/C-56/\" title=\"An Act to amend the Copyright Act and the Trade-marks Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts\">C-56 </a> is an important step to update our laws. </p>", "fr": "<p data-HoCid=\"3405815\" data-originallang=\"en\">Monsieur le Pr\u00e9sident, je remercie le d\u00e9put\u00e9 de son accueil chaleureux. La transition engendr\u00e9e par certaines parties du projet de loi, notamment la modernisation des r\u00e8gles l\u00e9gislatives r\u00e9gissant les marques de commerce et le renforcement du registre de la propri\u00e9t\u00e9 intellectuelle aux fronti\u00e8res, repr\u00e9sente un changement consid\u00e9rable.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"3405817\" data-originallang=\"en\">Le d\u00e9put\u00e9 a raison \u00e0 cet \u00e9gard, mais la difficult\u00e9 de la modernisation n'est pas une excuse pour ne pas agir.
