This is indeed an aspect that I did not address in my speech.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1015839\" data-originallang=\"fr\"> I have to say that Mr. Mulroney did in fact sue the Canadian government, claiming that he had been unfairly accused. In the statements he made at the examinations for discovery, he did not tell the lawyers everything. The decision to give him $2.1 million in compensation was made on the basis of his statements, which were incomplete.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1015840\" data-originallang=\"fr\"> One of the questions he was asked was about his business dealings with Karlheinz Schreiber, and he denied them. He did not report that he had received $300,000. He did not report that he had been retained\u2014perhaps also because he was not\u2014or report his business dealings with Karlheinz Schreiber.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1015841\" data-originallang=\"fr\"> And so the former Minister of Justice, Allan Rock, who appeared before our committee and who acted in good faith when he gave him the compensation\u2014or rather when he, as Minister of Justice at the time, allowed him to be given compensation\u2014told the committee, and subsequently said it publicly, that if he had known, the negotiations would have been handled differently.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1015842\" data-originallang=\"fr\"> If we have the common sense of the public, who are listening to us, the common sense of the people, the voters, who are also taxpayers, we can assume that if everyone had known this in 1999 or 2000 when the action was settled and the compensation paid, and if Brian Mulroney had been candid about his dealings with Karlheinz Schreiber, there would have been no compensation.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1015843\" data-originallang=\"fr\"> That being said, the commissioner who is to hold a public inquiry will have to examine this question. I think that he will inevitably come to the conclusion that the settlement will have to be revisited.</p>",

Au cours de ses d\u00e9clarations faites lors des interrogatoires, il n'a pas tout racont\u00e9 aux avocats. La d\u00e9cision de lui accorder 2,1 millions de dollars en d\u00e9dommagement a \u00e9t\u00e9 prise sur la base de ses d\u00e9clarations qui \u00e9taient incompl\u00e8tes.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1015840\" data-originallang=\"fr\">Entre autres, on lui a pos\u00e9 des questions sur ses relations d'affaires avec M. Karlheinz Schreiber et il les a ni\u00e9es. Il n'a pas racont\u00e9 qu'il avait re\u00e7u 300 000 $. Il n'a pas fait \u00e9tat qu'il avait un mandat \u2014 peut-\u00eatre aussi parce qu'il n'en avait pas aussi \u2014 ni de ses relations d'affaires avec Karlheinz Schreiber.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1015841\" data-originallang=\"fr\">Tant et si bien que l'ancien ministre de la Justice, Allan Rock, qui a comparu devant notre comit\u00e9 et qui \u00e9tait de bonne foi en lui accordant un d\u00e9dommagement \u2014 en tout cas, en permettant qu'on lui accorde un d\u00e9dommagement au moment o\u00f9 il \u00e9tait lui-m\u00eame ministre de la Justice \u2014, a dit au comit\u00e9, et l'a dit par la suite publiquement, que s'il avait su, la n\u00e9gociation se serait faite de fa\u00e7on diff\u00e9rente.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1015842\" data-originallang=\"fr\">Avec le gros bon sens de la population qui nous \u00e9coute, le gros bon sens des gens, des \u00e9lecteurs qui sont aussi des contribuables, on peut pr\u00e9sumer que si tout le monde avait su cela en 1999 ou en 2000 au moment du r\u00e8glement de la poursuite et du d\u00e9dommagement, et si Brian Mulroney avait dit franchement ses vraies relations avec Karlheinz Schreiber, il n'y aurait pas eu de d\u00e9dommagement.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1015843\" data-originallang=\"fr\">Cela \u00e9tant dit, il faudra que le commissaire qui fera une enqu\u00eate publique \u00e9tudie cette question. In\u00e9vitablement, je pense qu'il en viendra \u00e0 la conclusion qu'il faudra revoir cette entente.</p>"
