Mr. Speaker, just as we wind up the debate on Bill C-222, I too want to take a moment to recognize and pay tribute to my colleague from Dauphin for his commitment to the issue and for doing his bit, as a member of Parliament, to participate in private members' business and to advance the issues about which he cares. I am not sure if the general public realizes that this is one of the forums we can use as members of Parliament to advance the issues on behalf of constituents or for special causes.

Speaking from experience, I lived in the Yukon Territory for many years and enjoyed hunting. We spoke about caribou earlier. I lived in Dawson City, and the largest caribou herd in the world would walk by once a year. It made the harvesting and hunting of caribou quite easy when they showed up on our doorstep that way. It is part of the tradition, culture and heritage in that part of the world. We should acknowledge it in the same way we acknowledge our cultural diversity and in the same way we recognize biological and scientific diversity as part of the rich, cultural fabric that makes us Canadian.

As far as the Canadian identity goes, observers from other parts of the world identify Canada with our natural cultural heritage associated with the abundance of game, the way we have managed the harvest of that game and the recreation aspect as well of hunting, fishing and trapping.

We know trapping has had a bad rap in recent years. People throw blood on us if we wear a fur coat. In actual fact people who are more knowledgeable--

Monsieur le Pr\u00e9sident, juste comme nous achevons le d\u00e9bat sur le projet de loi C-222, je veux moi aussi prendre un peu de temps pour rendre hommage au d\u00e9put\u00e9 de Dauphin pour son engagement dans ce dossier et pour avoir pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 son projet de loi afin de d\u00e9fendre une cause qui lui tient \u00e0 coeur. Je ne sais trop si la population se rend compte que les projets de loi d'initiative parlementaire sont le moyen que nous avons, nous les d\u00e9put\u00e9s, pour faire avancer les dossiers aux noms de nos \u00e9lecteurs ou pour d\u00e9fendre des causes sp\u00e9ciales.

Puisque j'ai v\u00e9cu au Yukon pendant de nombreuses ann\u00e9es et que j'aimais la chasse, je peux parler d'exp\u00e9rience. Tout \u00e0 l'heure, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 question des caribous. J'ai v\u00e9cu \u00e0 Dawson City, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 le plus grand troupeau de caribous du monde passe une fois par ann\u00e9e. Lors de cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement annuel, il est tr\u00e8s facile de chasser cet animal. Cela fait partie de la tradition, de la culture et du patrimoine de cette r\u00e9gion. Nous devrions le reconna\u00eetre au m\u00eame titre que nous c\u00e9l\u00e9brons la diversit\u00e9 culturelle et que nous reconnaissons que la diversit\u00e9 biologique et scientifique fait partie du tissu culturel riche qui caract\u00e9rise le Canada.

Pour ce qui est de l'identit\u00e9 canadienne, les observateurs d'autres pays associent le Canada \u00e0 son patrimoine naturel caract\u00e9ris\u00e9 par son abondance de gibier, par notre fa\u00e7on de g\u00e9rer la chasse, par la valeur r\u00e9cr\u00e9ative de ce patrimoine ainsi que par la chasse, la p\u00eache et le pi\u00e9geage.

Nous savons que le pi\u00e9geage a une mauvaise r\u00e9putation ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es. Les gens projettent du sang sur ceux qui portent des manteaux de fourrure. En fait, les gens bien inform\u00e9s...
