I really enjoyed your testimony. It was very informative.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1674529\" data-originallang=\"en\">I just came back from Copenhagen, and over the weekend was at an environmental conference put on by Globe International\u2014it's just weeks away from 192 countries, thousands of people, going to Copenhagen looking for a new international agreement on climate change\u2014and I was very proud of our aggressive targets, a 20% reduction by 2020 and a harmonized approach with the United States.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1674530\" data-originallang=\"en\">It was my first time in Copenhagen. I always like to look ahead to see what they're doing. I flew through the night on Thursday, arrived there Friday morning, and Friday spent much of the day on a ship looking at the harbour and the turbines and seeing what Copenhagen was doing. They have a coal-fired generating plant right there in the city, too, also with turbines, so they realize there are some ways that they can clean up.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1674531\" data-originallang=\"en\">But I was struck by some of the efficiencies and their lifestyle. It's quite different from here in North America. To buy a vehicle, it's a 180% tax. Let's say you buy a $30,000 vehicle here in Canada. In Copenhagen, you would pay out of pocket maybe $80,000 to $85,000 because of that 180% tax. The sales tax is 25%, and fuel is $2.50 a litre Canadian. It's very expensive.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1674532\" data-originallang=\"en\">The targets that are being presented in Bill C-311 are European targets, yet the targets that Canada has set are aggressive considering our circumstances. So I really appreciated your testimony.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1674533\" data-originallang=\"en\">Taking this North American continental approach to the clean energy dialogue ongoing with the United States\u2014the Untied States was represented at the conference, too, by the way\u2014to me seems the logical way. In fact, the previous group of witnesses we had were scientists\u2014this was a week ago, Tuesday of last week\u2014and they acknowledged also that it was a good idea to have a continental approach, that Canada, and the United States, and Mexico have similar targets going into the international negotiations in Copenhagen and following.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1674534\" data-originallang=\"en\">So my question to you is how important is it that we have a continental approach? If we didn't, if we went the route of Bill C-311 and broke away from a continental approach and broke into a European target, what would that mean to your industries?</p>",

J'ai pris l'avion jeudi soir, je suis arriv\u00e9 l\u00e0-bas vendredi matin et j'ai pass\u00e9 la majeure partie de la journ\u00e9e de vendredi \u00e0 bord d'un bateau \u00e0 examiner le port, les turbines et ce que fait Copenhague. Il y a une centrale au charbon et des turbines en pleine ville et les Danois se rendent compte de la possibilit\u00e9 de nettoyer leur environnement.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1674531\" data-originallang=\"en\">J'ai toutefois \u00e9t\u00e9 frapp\u00e9 par leur efficacit\u00e9 et leur mode de vie. C'est tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rent de ce qui se passe ici en Am\u00e9rique du Nord. Pour acheter un v\u00e9hicule, vous devez payer une taxe de 180 p. 100. Disons que vous achetiez un v\u00e9hicule 30 000 $ ici, au Canada. \u00c0 Copenhague, vous devriez d\u00e9bourser peut-\u00eatre 80 000 $ \u00e0 85 000 $ \u00e0 cause de cette taxe de 180 p. 100. La taxe de vente est de 25 p. 100 et le carburant co\u00fbte 2,50 $CAN le litre. C'est tr\u00e8s cher.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1674532\" data-originallang=\"en\">Les objectifs propos\u00e9s dans le projet de loi C-311 sont les objectifs europ\u00e9ens, mais les objectifs que le Canada s'est fix\u00e9s sont quand m\u00eame ambitieux compte tenu de notre situation. J'ai vraiment appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 votre t\u00e9moignage.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1674533\" data-originallang=\"en\">Une approche nord-am\u00e9ricaine \u00e0 l'\u00e9gard du dialogue sur l'\u00e9nergie propre avec les \u00c9tats-Unis me semble logique \u2014 les \u00c9tats-Unis \u00e9taient d'ailleurs repr\u00e9sent\u00e9s \u00e9galement \u00e0 cette conf\u00e9rence. En fait, le groupe de t\u00e9moins pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent \u00e9tait compos\u00e9 de scientifiques \u2014 c'\u00e9tait il y a une semaine, mardi dernier \u2014 et ils ont reconnu qu'une approche continentale \u00e9tait une bonne id\u00e9e, que le Canada, les \u00c9tats-Unis et le Mexique avaient des objectifs similaires pour les n\u00e9gociations internationales de Copenhague et celles qui suivront.</p>\n<p data-HoCid=\"1674534\" data-originallang=\"en\">Par cons\u00e9quent, je voudrais savoir combien il est important, selon vous, que nous adoptions une approche continentale? Si nous ne le faisions pas, si nous suivions la voie du projet de loi C-311 et adoptions un objectif europ\u00e9en plut\u00f4t qu'une approche continentale, quelles en seraient les cons\u00e9quences pour vos industries?</p>"
